A detailed look at the Bright Stars catalog indicates that there are 87 stars listed whose declination is further south than Acrux.  Of these stars, 80 have a brightness of 3.0 or greater.  In other words, most of these stars are fairly dim, which was consistent with what I saw.  That is, relatively nothing.  Next time, I will know better and seek out Sigma Octans, at declination -88.9128 and brightness 5.47.  According to what I read, this should be visible to the naked eye!  There is no “bright star” further south in declination.  There may be other stars, but they didn’t make the USNO’s Bright Star list.

    Best Regards
