    It depends which app you use/buy Bill.

    For example, here in the UK:

    We get 'Maps' free with the iPhone 4, but it does indeed download detail on the fly - useless unless you spend all your time in a conurbation or driving on roads that have cellphone masts.

    Outdoor types might buy 'UK Map', which downloads defined large scale detail (free) just once when requested by the user, then stores it on the iPhone for present and future use. Much used by we fell walkers.


    As ever, cheap isn't the same as good value.
