    There are two general types of US Army compasses.
    One is the lensatic compass shown in the link below. It is used for general
    compass work.
    
    The other is the M2. The M2 is a much more accurate compass used by the
    artillery for more precise measurements. It is housed in a solid block of
    aluminum.

    comnpass and one uses the rechargable phospher and the other uses
