    NIal,
have you ever considered using a cylindrical slide rule
such as the MHR1 or Bygrave?

Very handy to use, I like it a lot (I use my
implementation of the MHR1). Small, light weight and
good to read in sunlight and unaffected by wind.

Takes a little work to make, but everything that is
    needed is to hand now.

Gary LaPooks implementaion of the principle is genius
and dirt cheap, so you may wish to try that first. It
is, howerver not really ideal to be used in an open
    cockpit.

    regards
    Wolfgang
