Philip, As a follow on from yr. remark on naming ships... A recent article indicates that Lloyd's list have neutered ships ! "LONDON (AP) - A shipping-industry newspaper said yesterday it will no longer refer to ships with the feminine pronoun "she," ending centuries of seafaring tradition...." See: http://www.usmm.org/lloyds.html I don't know how one can have no affection for a vessel which safely takes care of one over thousands of miles of ocean. I would suspect the person who decided this has never sailed a long distance on a small vessel. Aubrey. At 18:58 24-01-03, you wrote: >Ships are named like persons, without the definite article.
