I have a paperback book entitled "South: The Last Antarctic Expedition of Shackleton and the Endurance" with a forward by Tim Cahill. Lyons Press. 376pp. 1st ed. 1998. I have not counted the illustrations and line drawings but the book certainly has plenty of both. There appears to be a lot of Hurley's photos in the book. It also contains two appendices and index. I can't promise that it will deliver what you are looking for George but it is a very good book and appears to be fairly complete. I confess it has been a few years since I last read it so other than the above, I cannot offer any further comments or recommendations. I also have an older book written by Shackleton himself, entitled: "Shackleton in the Antarctic (being the story of the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-1909)" published in 1922 by William Heinemann, London. The book, 255 pages long, has about 50 illustrations. I paid $10 Cdn for it at a used book store about 20 years ago. This sounds like the same version that disappointed you George. So there's my two bits' worth on that topic. Hope this helps. cheers Robert ----- Original Message ----- From: "George Huxtable"To: Sent: Saturday, February 28, 2009 4:21 PM Subject: [NavList 7478] Shackleton's "South" > > Shackleton's attempt at a transpolar crossing in 1915-16, written up in > his > book "South", has been much discussed on the list recently. > > It has brought home to me the defects in my paperback copy of "South", > published by Century publishing, London, 1983.
