    Shackleton's "South"
    From: George Huxtable
    Date: 2009 Feb 28, 21:21 -0000

Shackleton's attempt at a transpolar crossing in 1915-16, written up in his
book "South", has been much discussed on the list recently.

It has brought home to me the defects in my paperback copy of "South",
published by Century publishing, London, 1983. This appears to have the full
text, as far as I can tell, including appendices, 368 pages, but none of
    Hurley's photos, and no map.

Hoping to put that right, I've just bought, quite cheaply, an older hardback
copy, published in 1936 by Heinemann (who produced the original edition in
1919, now extremely expensive), because it had the Hurley photos. Which it
does, 32 of them, but it turns out when you get into it that this is a
reprint of the "new abridged edition, 1922"; not what I wanted at all, with
only 202 pages of much-shortened text, no appendices.

Being long out of copyright, South" is now available from many different
publishers, but the trouble with searching for a more-complete version is
that it's hard to tell what it's a reprint of, before it arrives.

But an early full-text version is digitised on Project Gutenberg, and this
tells me that there were over 70 plates with it. That's what I would like to
obtain, without breaking the bank for it. I would be quite happy with a
paperback version, provided it is complete, and the photos have been
    decently reproduced.

A promising candidate seems to be "South: The Story of Shackleton's Last
Expedition in the Antarctic", a paperback published in the US by the Lyons
Press in 1998, which claims to offer "70 photos & line drawings" ISBN
9781558217836 , which I can buy cheaply. I wonder if any Navlist member
happens to have a copy, and can recommend it or otherwise. Or alternatively,
any other version that appears to be complete.

    George.
