Here's an odd one... There is a community of science fiction fans that produces rather high-end "fan films" based on the Star Trek franchise. These are not just 'YouTube' videos. They're a little amateurish, true, but they are produced as genuine films and they attract real talent. They call their series of films "Star Trek: New Voyages". There is a web site where you can download the episodes they've made so far: www.StarTrekNewVoyages.com. Now at this point, as you read this post, you're either rolling your eyes or your intrigued. :-) 10: IF INTRIGUED GOTO 20 ELSE END 20: READ ON... Here's a short notice that these folks published in the Staff Bulletin of Mystic Seaport in September: "Wanted: To borrow or barter for.... sail era navigational instruments, to be used for set decoration in our navigator's quarters during an October film shoot in upstate New York. Star Trek New Voyages is an award winning Internet series done entirely by volunteers, and I really want our navigators room to reflect a respect for the history of his craft. Instruments do not have to be in working condition. Credit will be given and deal can include an invitation to the sets. (We also need a good-sized wooden ship's wheel to be donated). Contact Patty Wright at 413-977-9138, or andriech[AT]comcast.net " I sent her an email asking if she had any luck and whether it would be all right to mention this on NavList. She replied, "No, I didn't have luck with this request. Although our October shoot is gone, we film again next June and October, and I would still be interested in having these items for those shoots... or to add permanently to our "prop" collection. Yes, please post it on the NavList, and thank you for offering. I had no idea this place existed. You may want to include a link to our production so folks can see what they are participating in. (something I didn't put in the staff bulletin) The link is www.startreknewvoyages.com Seems like there must be one Star Trek fan out there with a broken sextant they would donate for a chance to walk on the bridge of the Enterprise!" I can just imagine the line spoken by the captain as he casts his eyes over the starship navigator's collection of ancient instruments: "Is that a kamal? ...an old octant... a mid 20th century Husun sextant, an original Garmin handheld GPS unit!, and wow, that must be one of the first quintaths from the methane-sea-cruisers of Ceti Alpha 9..." It just writes itself, doesn't it? -FER http://www.HistoricalAtlas.com/lunars --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ Navigation List archive: www.fer3.com/arc To post, email NavList@fer3.com To , email NavList-@fer3.com -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
