Carl, Yes, I do teach sextant work for coastal piloting. It is very useful for determining where you are (as you know) in areas where LORAN and/or GPS don't work very well. For example some areas off the Virginia coast line and in the lower Chesapeake Bay. I teach vertical and horizontal angles. I also teach these same techniques to folks so that they can verify the position of aides to navigation. GPS, while good, until recently has not been accurate enough to verify buoy positions. derrick
