For whatever it might be worth re the telscopes on Russian sextants, I understand that some of them presented an inverted image, rather than the usual image seen in sextant telescopes.
Some suppliers had obtained scopes for Russian sextants they sold that present the "conventional" view, and the scope on Garry's Russian sextant might be one of these replacemnts, with the riser piece differently located.
This is just a guess on my part, but it might explain the situation.
