It's really up to our kind host, Dan, and not to me, to clarify what the rules are (and I hope he will). He steers us with a very light touch on the tiller. In several years with this list it seems that it's really stuff about radionavigation techniques (mostly GPS, of course) that's discouraged, for good reasons. I don't remember seeing any objection to discussion of computation and calculators, aboard or ashore, and similarly to other navigation techniques that rely heavily on electronics, such as fluxgate compasses and self-steering. Indeed, we have had several prolonged and satisfying discussions about such topics, without any objections being raised, by Dan or anyone else. I hope it will stay that way. So I hope that Bill, and anyone else, can feel free to discuss the legitimate topic of whether their celestial positions should be drawn from an almanac or computed, in some way, on board.
