Hi Alan
It can't be due to the constellation of satellites that comprise the GPS transmitters. They provide coverage of the entire planet. If the satellites failed, you can be assured that more than Nials would have complained.
So we must look to a local phenomena. It is possible that he has an intermittently functioning GPS receiver.
Its also possible that there was some local interference. The GPS RF band is restricted, so other than willful interference (jamming), I don't think he had a competing RF signal.
Local interference could consist of blocking the signal. The cabins are metal and would attenuate any RF signal, perhaps enough to cause the receiver to not get a lock.
Its something along these lines. Unless the intermittent failure becomes permanent, we ate unlikely to ever know the cause.
Brad
Re Nial's mention of GPS having "stopped working", then restarting, any ideas as to why or due to what cause, might he have gotten out of range??
Alan
