Hi Gary, I just read your post and I am so sorry I've thrown away all my sights some weeks ago. My best 3 sights were 0.4' and I had several more close to that and a bunch in the 1' to 1.5' range. Bear in mind that I was 98 feet above the water and on a very solid platform. The ship has 4 stabilizers so it has to be very rough indeed to get a roll. The horizon from that height is incredibly crisp. I got no star sights, just one of the same planet on two evenings. Overcast every evening and morning with few breaks in the cloud cover.
As regards the GPS, I remain mystified. It never worked while in the cabin but that's to be expected. Out on the balcony it did work. But mostly I used it on the top deck where there were no obstructions. When it stopped working it wouldn't say that it wasn't getting signals, rather the compass app would say that it was reverting back to magnetic. I brought my wife's iPhone 5 up on deck to compare and that too showed the same situation. I have plans to sail my boat from Cape May to the Azores, then South to the trades, back to the Bahamas and then back to Cape May is a few years. Something I've been dreaming about. It would be nice to know if GPS is or is not available. I should also mention that iPhones worked well for me all over the Eastern Caribbean so what happened in the Atlantic was very strange.
