It has been quite some time since I last had to do this but that last time was post-9/11. I had to take the sextant out of its case but made sure, all the while, that I explained that it is a nautical instrument and that it is very expensive and delicate. One time, the US customs agent, was ex-Navy. He was very interested in my C.Plath and called over one of his co-workers, also, ex-Navy to have a look. Lots of friendly banter and smiles all around and I was sent on my merry way.
