A zero-certificate, especially one produced by a reputable independent
agency like Kew, is an evidence of high quality workmanship.
Lecky, when he gives advise how to buy a sextant says
this (I cite by memory): go to the Kew observatory, they usually have
many
sextants of various brands tested at any time, and look which are the
quality brands.
Seems very reasonable to me.

I add that I've never seen a British sextant of 1940 or later with
zero
certificate. In fact the only modern sextants WITH a certificate
showing all zeros
I've seen on e-bay are Tamayas and even these are rare.
By "modern" I mean after 1940.
