I am surprised this device obtained a patent, partly because ball/disc integrators were an established mechanism, and the use in a sextant was not new because Plath had a similar arrangement in principle (though much more crude in operation) on their bubble sextant in WW2.
Perhaps the German patent had run out or was not valid post WW2.
