The term "octant" is still used in English to designate
the cheaper wooden XIX century instruments of which
there are plenty on e-bay, and they really are
    octants.

When I say "cheaper" I mean that they were cheaper in
XIX century, now they are more expensive than brass
    sextants:-)
They were used to measure altitudes only (as opposite
to the Lunars) the kind of measurement for which 1'
    accuracy is sufficient.

    Alex.
