Something I found strange was his using a "D"battery with the bubble sextant. The Kollsman sextant uses 28 volt bulbs to illuminate the bubble and scales so a "D" cell wouldn't work plus there is no place to insert this kind of battery. But, during the day you can take sun shots withougt illuminating the bubble so sun sights would have worked provided that the sextant had not been upgraded to the electronic averager which also requires 28 volts. If he still had the original mechanical clock work averager then daytime sights would have been ok.

    Dear Richard,
    If not confidential ...
When ? Aircraft Type ? Where ? As an Airline, Pilot (A343/345) , I find a few things "strange" if not inconsistent in the reported story ...
    Thanks in advance,
    Kermit
