Bill,
The problem shade is off a Tamaya Jupiter from 1980. It is the darkest of four shades covering the index mirror. It measures 1.60"diameter on one side and 1.49" diameter on the other. This particular shade has never worked well from day one. A fuzzy image of the Sun is seen no matter what :( The solution was to use the other three shades together to get the same amount of shading. One a bright clear day I need a bit more shading and have been using solar film fixed to the weakest shade for a good sharp Sun. I'm looking for a better fix giving full flexability of all four shades. The plan is to swap solar film for the problem shade. To do this the shade needs to be removed which I can't see how to do.
