You can estimate the height of the sun with your hand.
When your hand is at arm's length, place you palm so that it's facing you
and your fingers are horizontal. The width of your palm is approximately 10
degrees. Place your other hand over your fist... now you have 20 degrees
and so on.
I use this to estimate the height of a body and preset the arc of the
sextant... works quite well.
