"It is clear to me that using either the Sight Calc App or scientific calculator method for determing Hc and Z are way easier that trying to use any of the sight reduction tables." -Paul Fithian
Hi Paul,
I'm also relatively new to this field. I've tried lots of different sight reduction techniques. I have two favorite methods: direct calculation and Pub.229. Of those two, I usually prefer the calculator method. But only because my calculator is usually closer to me! :) I think you might be surprised how easy and FAST the Pub.229 tables are once you become familiar with them. (They'll beat a scientific calculator any day!) The only disadvantage is the size of the collected volumes. I'm also learning to use Pub.249, which I think could be even faster. But, it requires a different technique.
Anyway, in case you didn't know, many of these tables are available free to download at the NGA Maritime Safety Information website found here:
http://msi.nga.mil/NGAPortal/MSI.portal
Just pick "publications" from the menu on the left, then select the one you're interested in from the drop down menu. ;)
Good luck, and welcome to the list!
Regards,
Sean C
