Paul- I'm just a little behind you. I seem to be more interested in the sextant than sextanting. So, I'm calibrating, aligning, rebuilding, etc. But we should keep in touch as I venture onto my back porch with an artificial horizon and see who's right- Google Earth or me.
I've learned a lot about the motion of the night sky with Starry Night software. It's not for navigation, but it gives an ephemeris for any object focussed on and is nice in that it shows real time changes.
I've also looked at two other programs, Celestia (Frank R, I can't remember the exact name?), which is referenced many times on this board as well as Alcyone Ephemeris. Again, not for navigation, but they're very graphic.
Thanks for all the suggestions, too.
And what a great group of folks on this board. None smarter, none more in love with all things celestial and terrestrial. Welcome to the world of Spherical Excess.
Yes- we need a tee-shirt.
Norm
