I agree on the better capability obtainable with a metal sextant. My wife looked at those and then decided on the Davis Mark 15.
But since it is for learning and possible backup navigation, I'm not sure I would ever make the move to a metal sextant. No matter how good it is, it won't be as accurate as the cheapest GPS.
For me, the learning process and being able to convert from a sextant sight to a position is truly fascinating.
