I noticed your mention of a Davis Artificial Horizon. While some here cast aspersions on such a device, I personally have been unable to do anything but Am and PM sun shots with one, standing in a parking area at our apartment complex. In-so-far as the accuracy obtained, using an Astra 111B, a alum frame sextant I bought myself, reducing and plotting such sights as above mentioned produce a calculated fix well inside 5 NM of GPS coordinates, most of the time. I do screw up from time to time, but that's me, not the AH. It's a fascinating hobby interest, and beside that, it strikes me that classical skills, of and in themselves, are worth keeping, notwithstanding comments sometimes offered about the making of buggy whips.
