Sorry that Peter Smith missed out on the copy of Cotter's "A history of nautical astronomy", that had been available on ABE books. As he says, it may have been another list member that beat him to it. But it may not. There's a real problem when you chase up books on many websites such as ABE. Many volumes that have already been sold remain listed on the site for some time. Many, perhaps the majority, of books listed for sale are virtual books rather than real ones, existing in name only. If sellers do not remove their goods from the shop window when they have been sold (and many dealers are very slack about this) it subverts the whole intention of the website. It's a pity, because in other respects these sites provide a valuable service. If you submit the title as a "want", it will usually turn up in the end, but you may find that a canny seller, knowing that it's in demand, may boost his price accordingly.
