I examined the application of the metric system to navigation quite a few years ago, and came to this conclusion: My proposal for adapting the meter to navigation is to define a new unit, the nautical kilometer. It would be 1/60 of a degree at the Equator, and with this new unit, we would be in consonance with the metric system, and yet able to do business as usual, with only minor changeover pains. And if some diehard insisted on using the archaic nautical mile, he could still do so without discrimination. And besides, who would know?
