Using SI units has the advantage of knowing what one is dealing with. A kilometre is always the same kilometre. However, a gallon is not everywhere the same gallon and a mile not every where the same mile, it thus requires first to figure out which could be meant. There are more of those odd things. At least a million is every where the same but a billion and higher values not. And how about the cars driving on the "wrong"side? But this is unfortunately not a subject of SI units.
