Thank you to everyone for the help, it is well appreciated. Now I have a starting point
Norm, the intended use was to calibrate the crosshairs on a survey auto level. The accepted “two peg” method of adjusting an auto level is basic, I assumed this autocollimator could help me “step it up a notch”

Yes- I have a similar surplus unit,and yes,it must be mounted on some sort of adjustable base to be practical, not precision, just so you can rough it in with respect to test surface.
What is your intended use?
General? Aligning sextant mirrors? Can you send a pic?
