2 good books have plans and full instructions.
1)Latitude Hooks and Azimuth Rings by Dennis Fisher
2)The Lo-Tech Navigator by Tony Crowley.
Both have plans for lots of good hsitorical instruments, including 18th century yype octants that work well.
