I prefer my Husun Mate to a C+P.  The C+P is more accurate, especially with a 6x telescope, but the Mate is more compact and has a nice heft; I can use it longer without tiring.  The Mate's light is handier for recording sights.  The black ones also are a thing of beauty.

    Hi David,
Grey crinkle finish. I think the original price was about £340 ?(collectors item rather than navigation tool). I got it for £240 since it needs some repairs and should then be OK for navigation I hope.
    Best wishes

Is your KH Mates Mk 2 a black or grey crinkle finish model?  I ask because I was wondering how much they go for these days.  I know a chap locally who's looking for a metal sextant, and I know a chap, also locally, who had a late model Hughes to sell.  Last time I almost arranged a sale for him a number of years ago we were taking about £200 GBP, but I suspect that their price must have dropped in recent years, because of the availability of more modern larger mirror sextants from ship breakers in the Far East.  Incidentally, when I received my own 1940s Hughs Mates Three Circle off ebay, there was a bill inside from the 1950s for a replacement mirror from a chandlers in South Wales for nine pounds  ten shillings.  This is a guess, because my sextant is in TIKI at the moment, but next time I visit I'll take a photo. I took it plus a MkIX and a MkIXBM, because a chap from Humber Yawl Club actually asked me to show him how to use one.  We got quite a good Mer Pass with all three.  DaveP
