     Most of these Navigation  algorithms start out as universal solutions based
    on fundamental trigonometry, but then morph into 'Rules of Thumb' to help
    memorise simple procedures for use in times of stress. it is good to get
    back to basics. I was taught in the RAF many years ago that 
    "(Air) Navigators do not need to be mathematians but they do have to be very
    very good at arithmetic"
