... sorry for soliloquising ... Just made a check calculation for the second observation. Using the standard atmosphere results in a refraction of 49.9 min arc; changing the lapse rate between 4000m and 5000m to zero increases (not reduces) this value marginally to 50.0 min arc. This can't therefore be the reason for the much lower observed refraction.
