... I notice that I focused in the sounding data on the situation near the horizon and not on other heights. I only realise now that in the second of the two cases the temperature was constant between about 4000m and 5000m, thus at a height range below and above of the observer. May be it's this situation which lead to a low refraction in the second of the two observations.
