... after some further thoughts ... (1) I investigated some time ago how the refraction at large zenith distance depend on changes in temperature and pressure at the observer and found at that time that those dependencies are quite exponential. (2) It could also be that this low refraction is caused by the transition at the upper level of the boundary layer which is likely to be in this case below the observer.
