Maybe this is old news, but I found this to be a useful adjunctive read as I crawl up the CN learning curve: http://www.tpub.com/inteng/15.htm . It is an online textbook of land surveying, but this chapter talks about the basics of nautical navigation as well. It has some nice diagrams and concise definitions.
