There is by all accounts a lively business in re aluminizing astronomical
mirrors, of 6 inch diameter and up... But the newtonian telescope also
features a front surface plane diagonal, of elliptical shape, whose
major diameter may vary from 1/2 to 2 inches.
I wonder if any mirror is currently silvered?
Aluminizing is rugged and quite long lasting. Some astronomical mirrors
have a surface coating on top of the aluminizing which confers great rub
    resistance too.
