One important point that has not been mentioned in the discussion of noon sights is that the sun will often poke his head out around noon on many a dismal day, so that the noon sight is the most reliable means of getting a fix, from one day to the next, in the absence of electronics. I don't know whether this has bearing on the ceremony surrounding the noon shot, but.... Fred Hebard
