Speaking of reducing plotting work. Is there a simple way to calculate the
precession and nutation values into the intercept and azimuth without
    plotting them?

    1. Use of Alt Table . The use of this is really just one of preference,
some like to do as much as possible by calculation and then transfer to the
chart, while others like to put the raw data on the chart and then work
    from there.

    2. Accuracy of Volume 1. provided you have the right epoch then Vol 1 is as
accurate as is needed if taking sights at sea. At a guess the original 1947
edition would probably still be within the accuracy of practical sights.
Quite frankly, when I was doing this sort of thing for a living, getting a
cocked hat of less than five miles made me pretty pleased. However,
although a grateful government gave me Vols 1-3 to use, my preference was
for Hughes tables which was a sixth of the weight and volume to lug around.
