The snippet of the Raft book posed Mr. Gatty's premise that someone without prior knowledge of celestial navigation and with limited resources could navigate his way to a safe port.
The discussion on the "harp" introduced on pp.65-67 indicates that it can be used to determine latitude and angular measurements of the sun and stars. Unfortunately the instructions on how to do this are on page 94, beyond the scope of the snippet.
Would someone with access to the Raft Book please post those instructions.
