When using a Davis sextant with a mirror AH I too found the sun too bright. You can tape an extra plastic shade film over the darkest horizon filter to improve this. I used 2 lenses from a pair of 3D glasses, rotated them to get the polarizing darkening effect, and taped them to the outermost filter.
(See my posting for 14 October 2011.) My Atsra shades are darker and this extra shading is not required.
