    Yes, if that's the case. Is John certain that it is the case, though?
    
    It's corresponds to my own experience that if a wave is going to spill over,
    it will spill on the downwind side. But at the point before that occurs, I
    can't say that I've noticed any great difference in the steepness of the
    wave on one side rather than another. I've been through many local overfalls
    in my sailing time, but only in conditions when they have been somewhat
    embarrassing: (sometimes considerably so...)  I've always managed to avoid
    the dangerous conditions, happy to say.
