"what is the "proper" term for the initial accuracy checkout of a sextant when it's first acquired? " Nothing more than "adjustment". The mirrors have to be set perpendicular to the frame. The telescope's axis should be parallel to the frame. It is desirable to adjust the index error down to some amount between about 0.5 and 3 minutes. It's not necessary to do better than that. -FER 42.0N 87.7W, or 41.4N 72.1W. www.HistoricalAtlas.com/lunars
