Re: QMOW Days work in Navigation

I was taught Jeremy's way in the US Navy schoolhouse. Noon sight meant looking for maximum altitude only. DR reset to morning and evening twilight multi-LOP fixes, daytime stuff (mid-morning and afternoon sun lines, maximum altitude "LAN") for running fixes only. I still have my first 159 page study guide, using a 1977 or 1978 almanac for the problems. Sextant navigation was a dead practice in my tin cans (ending in 1992), so I can't say "how it really was" only how the Navy schoolhouse wanted it.

If pressed, I'd say maximum altitude "LAN" was OK because the plotted result was a R-FIX, which is lower-order accuracy than a FIX (multi-LOP). The real LAN vs. maximum altitude error gets put into the R-FIX uncertainty, in other words.

    Joe
