    OpenOffice Calc can generate charts and produce polynomial fits in very much the same way as Excel does.
    As for the "Solver" tool, perhaps the following info will be useful:

    For this sort of problem a spreadsheet program becomes really very
    handy even though the human eye can surprisingly well estimate such
    (linear) regression lines. On your Mac the spreadsheet program seems
    to be Works which I don't know. May be there is an other Mac-user on
    NavList who can give you some hints on how such polynomial regressions
    can be calculated with a few clicks. Or, as in the case of the
    arc-tan-function, how to find the solution using the equivalent of
    what "Solver" does in Excel.
