As I understand it, when originally preparing the
Polaris correction tables the thinking was that it would be easier (and perhaps
less error-prone, too) if all of the corrections were done as additions (vs.
mixing it up adding/subtracting), and then with 1 degree subtracted at the
end as a final "correction".
At least that's how I remember it, if I'm wrong
I'm sure some of the others will chime in with the correct answer...
