Just an historical footnote:  The Pub 229 tables were produced on an IBM 1410 computer, vintage 1960. By today's standards, that computer had very limited capabilities. My guess is that once the tables were generated, to re-organize them would have meant starting over almost from scratch, and would have take a rather long time. Why the decision was made to organize them by LHA in the first place, I can't say. Personally, I never did like 214 or 229.

I believe that the 229 tables were among the first to be generated by computer.

I don't know myself.  Perhaps one of the historians of the group can help here.  I haven't cracked 214 in awhile, but I seem to remember that being organized around Latitude as well.  I will say this about 229, its star ID methods are terrible.  214 was vastly superior and I used the Rude Star Finder on my exams for Star ID.
