Hello to all,
First of all, my most sincere thanks to all of you who took time to analyse the ".pdf vs. .jpg" topic and who published they very interesting replies, especially in the course of the recent NavList Thread " I SAY AGAIN -- Re: ADMIN: attachments: pdf vs jpg and others ".
My essential aim has been attempting to reduce printing times and ink consumption.
A set of 4 color cartridges costs about 40 to 45 USD in Europe and the actual number of printed pages will rarely exceed 50 pages in the real world, before you are to replace at least one of such cartridges ....
In other words, scanned documents file size is certainly secondary to my own priority of reducing printing costs. Electronics documents size / required storing space has now come almost for free, while the home printers ink stays and is likely to stay outrageously expensive.
The most "critical" situation (or "pathological example" :-) as Frank you named it) happens when you have to scan a manual document.
Manual Documents are frequently published on NavList.
I recently found that on at least 2 different brands of Home Scanners/Printers, the default settings of .pdf vs. .jpg have rendered the option of Scanner-Saving documents under the .pdf format an excellent option and - to my own sense - a highly preferable one.
Why is that so ? When printing a ".jpg saved" just previously scanned document, a home Printer head moves quite fast and the printed lines are extremely narrow. On the other hand, when printing a ".pdf saved" just previously scanned document, the printer head moves much slower while printing much wider lines.
All in all, printing a same scanned document will take up much less time if such document has been saved under the .pdf format just after having been scanned. The printing ratio is approximately 1 to 3 in favour of .pdf vs. .jpg.
Also, the default settings of the .pdf generally make it immediate to print a scanned half page into the same half page printed document. This is no so with .jpg documents.
As an example, one half page scanned and recently published in NavList just came printed out as a full page on my Printer, which was not exactly what I was expecting. On the other hand any time I scan/.pdf save one half page and subsequently print it, it comes as occupying only one half page on a printed sheet.
*******
As a Conclusion - and even if the .jpg documents show a lot of advantages as a some of you have very kindly explained here - I am just raising the attention of my NavList Fellows who scan and print documents : saving them under the .pdf format can be the best choice given the default settings of your addressees' Printers.
Thanks again for your Kind and Patient Attention, and
Best Regards to all
Kermit
