Clarification: I stated, "As a sanity check, make two images of the same scene with your digital camera. One with the lowest quality setting, and the other with the highest quality setting." On many digital camera's there are both resolution and quality settings. Quality controls the amount of compression, size is the number of Megapixels. (This equates to resolution in two images printed out to the same dimensions.) My intent was to suggest producing the largest and smallest megapixel images your camera (or scanner) can manage, rather than using the same number of megapixels and adjusting quality/compression.
