    Precise great-circle calculation
    From: George Huxtable
    Date: 2001 Nov 19, 2:44 PM

Lu Abel, in a posting with subject "Haversine formulae for Great Circles", says-

    >For sailing (which IS the focus of this group, of course) mid-Lat would be
    >just fine (Mercator Sailing gives a rhumb line course so it wouldn't be
    >applicable)

    This puzzles me somewhat.

In the context we are discussing, (when the destination is very close to
the point of departure), then a rhumb line and a great circle become
    indistinguishable.

    George.
