I note your difficulties with understanding, having sort of been there. I
teach only a single sight reduction method, and I tell my students that
when they really need it, conditions are not likely to be favorable. I
remind them that it's likely to be dark, and that the boat is unhappy,
and that everything is wet, and that their pencil will keep falling on
the floor, and that their stomach is rebelling, but they still have to
reduce the sight. That's when knowing the method so well that it's
automatic is paramount, because it's no time to start learning. I want to
impress on them the importance of knowing the method so well that no
thought is required.
